What is the difference between web and desktop application?

The biggest difference between Desktop and web application is- Desktop App is the machine dependent which essentially means that the software has to be installed in the specified machine and can be used in the specified machines only. And every change has to be at the machine level. Whereas a Web App is the Internet dependent program and is installed / deployed in a remote server and accessed using a browser.
